Pride isn't 8.4% of our year
With June coming to an end, the number of rainbow logos and companies that "support" members of the LGBTQ+ community will decrease, probably even diminish completely once July 1st arrives. Sadly, the end of June also means the Pride that some members of the LGBTQ+ community have and exult will also diminish because they'll have to go back into the closet as a result of their less-inclusive work environment and/or unwelcoming family. With the lack of support and unwelcoming environments by all involved, continuing one's Pride and being their authentic selves is more than difficult and this is why we mustn't stop celebrating Pride nor showing love and support for the LGBTQ+ community. Acceptance, allyship, and representation matters and here's why. According to a 2021 national survey issued by an LGBTQ+ organization, The Trevor Project, "Only 1 in 3 LGBTQ youth found their home to be LGBTQ-affirming." Of the nearly 35,000 youth participants who were surveyed, that means approximately 67% of the LGBTQ+ youth surveyed, reported that they don't have acceptance in their home. Pride doesn't end when June ends.
When July begins, take notice of those who do stop celebrating Pride such as people and companies, because they can't call themselves true allies of the LGBTQ+ community if their support ends when June ends. Why can't these companies keep Pride items and clothing year round? Pride is a celebration of LGBTQ+ rights and is not recognized as a seasonal holiday because such rights are constantly being fought for. This is what makes Pride different than a seasonal holiday; therefore, should be treated differently. What these same companies don't realize or think about, is that members of the LGBTQ+ community can't just turn off their Pride as simply as they, the companies, can remove their Pride items from the sales floor or change their logo from rainbow back to black or white. Pride is not a thing or fad, it's a part of who each LGBTQ+ person is. Unfortunately, these companies are simply showing up because they look and think of Pride as a fad and know they can make a quick buck by adding such items to their inventory. So I ask again, why can't companies keep Pride items and clothing year round? Don't allow others to tell you when you can celebrate you! Pride doesn't end when June ends.
Those who show up for the LGBTQ+ community only during June are not true allies. If you think you're one of these allies I speak of, make a change now and continue your allyship. If you find yourself ever hiding who you are, know there are people who support you and care about you. Be you for you for you and no one else. Pride doesn't end when June ends.
