Pride isn't 8.4% of our year

With June coming to an end, the number of rainbow logos and companies that "support" members of the LGBTQ+ community will decrease, probably even diminish completely once July 1st arrives. Sadly, the end of June also means the Pride that some members of the LGBTQ+ community have and exult will also diminish because they'll have to go back into the closet as a result of their less-inclusive work environment and/or unwelcoming family. With the lack of support and unwelcoming environments by all involved, continuing one's Pride and being their authentic selves is more than difficult and this is why we mustn't stop celebrating Pride nor showing love and support for the LGBTQ+ community. Acceptance, allyship, and representation matters and here's why. According to a 2021 national survey issued by an LGBTQ+ organization, The Trevor Project, "Only 1 in 3 LGBTQ youth found their home to be LGBTQ-affirming." Learn from 2020

No matter who you ask, 2020 was a year that brought challenges. No matter the occupation or home location, many of us endured the stress and the many challenges of 2020. Did somebody say global pandemic?      As an educator, the Coronavirus impacted my life personally and professionally. Teaching from home with little to no preparation? Fine! I learned at the start of my career that I had to be flexible as changes with education, students, standards, etc., would often happen and with lit...

Is PRIDE more than just a month?

Image
Unless you've been living under a rock you know that pride month is celebrated the entire month of June but then some cities and countries will extend it before and/or after the month. The pride of individuals doesn't begin and finish when the month of June falls upon us. But it is the time when many members of the LGBTQIA+ community feel most comfortable expressing their identities. I could have you sit here and have you read all about the history of pride month but that's not what this blog is about. Don't get me wrong, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am a big advocate; however, my overall focus of the blog is to share my struggles and triumphs as an educator who also happens to be gay. It's been over seven months since my last post and it's mainly because I felt that I needed to find my footings again. I was being questioned of the sincerity and truthfulness of what I was saying which got brought to the attention of all sorts of higher-ups at th...
